Happy New Year

The past few years we always felt a bit jealous while watching the Dutch news on December 31 around 2pm: “Sydney welcomes the new year as one of the first with spectacular fireworks”. While we turn the heater up, the TV would show the Harbour Bridge, warm weather and the Opera House. If we only could… For years this has been the same old story. But not this time, this year will be different. Let’s go to Sydney and have it all: the harbor, the party, the fireworks… We’ll even throw in a Harbour Bridge climb, the whole shebang!

In Sydney, we stay at Max’s cousin Esther and her family. A lovely few days, full of Dutch ‘gezelligheid’, cozy dinners and body boarding with the kids. Before heading to the city center for New Years Eve, we spend the morning hiking the coastal walk from Dee Why to Curl Curl Beach. After a swim and some fish & chips, the Manly ferry takes us to where the magic will happen tonight. The city is full of people awaiting the big moment, whilst holding on to their precious spot they claim for hours (or days). We bought festival tickets for Harbour Hoopla, so no queuing up for us at 6am.

New Years’ Eve is amazing; we have the perfect bridge view from our picnic rug. With a bottle of sparkling and our hamper full of delicious food we welcome the New Year with over a million other people in Sydney’s harbour. 2016 has been a year full of extreme ups & downs; let’s start 2017 full of hope, health & love. Happy new year everyone!
